All About Ayurveda | Ayurvedic Medicine in Modern Use

Read time: 3 mins

Did you know that over 200,000 Americans use Ayurveda in their day to day lives? This complementary and alternative medicine practice is over 3,000 years old and is still being sought after by people around the world.

In this post, you’ll learn all about Ayurveda and Ayurvedic medicine – where it comes from, who it’s for and why we trust it to be the foundation of our products.

What is Ayurveda?

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system based on traditional texts which have been preserved for thousands of years. The medicine itself is much older than that, having been developed and preserved by practitioners over millennia. Sushruta, who was an ancient Ayurvedic practitioner known as the “father of surgery,” developed and had detailed records of surgical procedures including rhinoplasty, kidney stone extraction and sutures as early as the sixth century BCE.

Treatment in Ayurvedic care combines medicines made from plants, minerals and animal products, diet, exercise, and daily lifestyle habits to bring balance to our inner and outer experience. Someone following a protocol in Ayurveda may take an herbal infusion daily, have yoga or exercises to do, follow a different schedule for their daily hygiene practices or receive different therapies based on their imbalance.

Who benefits from it?

Since Ayurveda is a traditional practice concerned with treating individuals with the appropriate therapy, the methods and practices used are specifically tailored to each person based on their age, season, imbalance, diet, daily habits and previous health history.

There is no “one size fits all” method, medicine or concept in Ayurveda. Ayurveda can benefit anyone – as long as they are willing and able to follow their doctor or practitioner’s recommendations.  A wise yogi once said, “A good patient takes the medicine the doctor gives them. If you don’t trust the doctor, don’t put yourself under their care.”

While Ayurveda can support biomedical (modern) treatments and other types of care, it is not beneficial to mix and match treatments, medicines and practices. One should consult with their doctor and Ayurveda practitioner on all the therapies and practices they are following at a given time.

Why do we trust in Ayurveda?

Developing faith in different traditions of medicine may seem unusual for anyone who grew up in the modern biomedical insurance model. However, after years of personal experience and study in traditional South & Southeast Asian practices of medicine and meditation practices, our founder Pasha is a firm believer in this body of knowledge that has helped people stay healthy for millenia.

Like many people, maybe even you, Pasha experienced some medical mysteries that left her doctors scratching their heads and prescribing catch-alls without any definitive prognosis. After trying alternatives, supplements and trending health and wellness fads, she was still relatively close to where she started – feeling stressed, exhausted, and depleted.

Through some targeted diet changes, the introduction of simple medicines at certain times of the day and making the effort to meditate and exercise regularly, she started to notice some changes. As the months passed, the treatment changed as she progressed. Through the slow and steady process of adopting energy-promoting daily habits, a wholesome local and seasonal diet, and herbal and body therapies that supported her health, Pasha finally felt strong, rejuvenated, detoxified and energized. With this unexpected result after years of failed medical experiences, Pasha began to study the herbs and formulas that helped her heal.

At Rasananda Ayurveda, we trust in this ancient medical system because it has continued successfully and uncontaminated for thousands of years. The information preserved by practitioners who sacrificed to live and experience these herbs for years to help inform later generations is sacred. The information we study and preserve with our medicine practice is available due to great masters, teachers and practitioners that respect and protect it with utmost reverence. We rely on the precious preservation of knowledge from the past and see its results in ourselves and our customers each day. We trust that the three pillars of health in Ayurveda– nutrition, sleep and a balanced lifestyle– provide a framework for preventive care.
